Visa requirements and support schemes

The visa you need to work in the UK will depend on the specific role you have and where you intend to work.

If you are not a British citizen you will need to apply for a visa from the UK Visas and Immigration Department before you can enter and work in the UK.

The most common visas for physiotherapists are the ‘Health and Social Care Visa’ or ‘Skilled worker visa’. You need a job offer to apply for these visas and the employer to provide you with a certificate of sponsorship.

If you’re coming to work for the NHS, an NHS supplier, or in adult social care, you may be able to apply for a Health and Care visa. This is cheaper than a skilled worker visa and includes an exemption from paying the Immigration Health Surcharge.

If you are coming to work in the independent or private sector, you may apply for a skilled worker visa.

UK Government work in the UK provides full details on visa requirements and the latest guidance on the UK's immigration rules.

If you are a physiotherapist who is new to the UK, and seeking advice on immigration issues, we recommend you consult an immigration advisor who is accredited by the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner (OISC).

eVisas

From August 2024 UKVI is  replacing physical documents with an online record known as an eVisa. If you hold a biometric residence card or permit, passport endorsements (such as indefinite leave to remain wet ink stamps), or vignette stickers in your passport then you will need to set up an eVisa account.

Support schemes

Across the UK NHS Health Boards and Trusts may be able to access support schemes to help you in relocation to the UK.

What is available will depend on the Health Board or Trust, so you will need to make enquiries directly to find out what is available.

Support schemes can include financial support towards flights, accommodation and visas, as well as pastoral support.
