Israel-Gaza: supporting physios through conflict

CSP position on Israel-Gaza (updated Thursday 3 October 2024)

In light of the scale of ongoing humanitarian suffering in Gaza, the CSP has update our position statement on the Israel-Gaza conflict:

The CSP has consistently supported an immediate cessation of actions that risk the lives of civilians, including health workers, in Gaza and Israel. We therefore demand  an immediate, multi-lateral and lasting ceasefire.

We call on all parties to the conflict, neighbouring states, international organisations and all those who can have influence over these parties to ensure the following:

  • An immediate and unconditional release of all hostages
  • An end to all Israeli military action in Gaza
  • An end to attacks on Israel and Israelis by armed groups based in Gaza
  • Respect for the neutrality of medical facilities in Gaza by all sides
  • The free flow of food, water, medical supplies and fuel into Gaza
  • An end to violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.

We recognise the scale of the rehabilitation challenge the conflict has created and stand ready to support the WHO and local partners in addressing this challenge.

    Supporting physios through conflict

Rehabilitation for those injured will be an ongoing challenge even after any cessation of violence, especially in Gaza. Many members of the global physiotherapy community want to help.

    International support

It is important that support is designed to provide what is most needed locally. Requests for practical help will come through the World Health Organisation to World Physiotherapy. World Physiotherapy will coordinate member organisations, including the CSP, to provide the support needed.

The CSP has been liaising with World Physiotherapy, who are in direct contact with the leaders of the physiotherapy associations in Palestine, Israel and neighbouring countries.

There has been no request for support in the region. At this stage of the conflict it would be virtually impossible to provide practical help in Gaza.

    Working in conflict zones

CSP members already work in paid and voluntary roles around the World supporting communities facing conflict, environmental challenges and economic disadvantage.

    Financial support

Members who want to offer financial support for humanitarian action may wish to support one of these organisations:
