5 reasons to study this programme at University of Leicester

The BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy course at the University of Leicester is delivered by a cohesive team of lecturer-practitioner staff who are all experts in their chosen clinical fields of physiotherapy practice.

The course is divided into 4 main strands: First, the Clinical Skills strand where teaching prepares the student to enter practice education.

The second strand is Practice Education where the student has experience of a variety of the three core areas of skills for a physiotherapist within the clinical field: Cardiorespiratory, Musculoskeletal and Neurology. The clinical component is delivered in year two by two placements and in year three with three further placements. Placements are organised by the practice education staff team who ensure that all students have a balanced and appropriate level of practice education and overall profile. Our course has excellent links with our practice placement colleagues who work in a wide variety of clinical settings including NHS wards, outpatients units and clinics, a specialist brain injury unit, adult and paediatric palliative care units, private, independent and charitable facilities and Leicester Tigers Rugby Club.

The third strand explores the principles and strategies of Evidence Based Practice to enable students to apply a wide range of sources of evidence for clinical decision making.

The final strand of the course is the theme of Professional Development which runs throughout the three years. In a health and social care environment where the patient is at the heart of care this strand aims to produce physiotherapists who understand the nature of health from a holistic perspective and are able to offer advice tailored to the individual in order to bring about improvements in health and wellbeing.

All practical skills teaching is undertaken in small student classes with a maximum staff:student ratio of 1:17. Clinical skills teaching is delivered in newly refurbished specialist teaching accommodation which includes state-of-the-art clinical skills labs using high fidelity simulation manikins, in our 360-degree immersive simulation facility and anatomy teaching benefits from access to the Medical School’s anatomy dissection room.

During both university-based teaching and practice education our students will have the opportunity to work and study inter-professionally with other health and social care students. The teaching staff and students supervised by members of the teaching team are research active and engage in cutting edge clinical research that has been published at a national and international level.
