The programme offers a student-centred focus to the study of physiotherapy, with a theme-based curriculum within a case-based learning approach. The programme is structured around four themes that combine to underpin physiotherapy practice:
- Competencies for physiotherapy;
- Personal and professional development;
- Society and public health;
- Research.
These themes are integrated in modules throughout the programme. Students will work in groups and independently to explore knowledge, skills, values and behaviours, and have opportunity to analyse, reflect, debate, develop and revisit ideas, concepts and practice, as they progress through the programme. Students will be seen as equal partners and participants in the learning process.
This integrated course prepares students for the breadth of contemporary physiotherapy practice in the continually evolving Health and Social Care sector. The small cohort ensures staff will get to know each student by name. Students will start learning in the clinical environment from the first semester, in a way that makes links between theory and practice from day one.
The structure of the course is innovative: there is one module for each of the six semesters, with integrated part-time clinical placements for four of the six modules. Approximately 2/3 of the clinical placements are part-time (1-2 days per week), and there is a five-week full-time elective placements towards the end of the course where students can choose their own clinical placement location.
We have purpose built rehabilitation and assessment facilities, which includes a therapy clinic and movement analysis laboratory. We have established excellent links with physiotherapists working in the NHS and private practice across the North West. We also have links with charitable organisations and international institutions and hospitals, providing excellent opportunities for our students to gain experience of the breadth of contemporary physiotherapy practice.
