Barriers? What Barriers? - Report from the LaMPS National Conference Cardiff 2011

18 August 2011

The 2011 LaMPS National Conference was held in July in Cardiff. The theme was addressing the barriers that are found in the day to day work of therapy managers in healthcare across the UK.

A strong multidisciplinary slant to the day had been encouraged and it was great to have an audience of podiatrists, occupational therapists, dieticians and physiotherapists.

File 101030The morning was given over to recognition and consideration of what we deem to be a barrier. Matt Wyatt, from the National Leadership and Innovation Agency, gave an enthusiastic session on ‘Working with barriers – How do we do it?’

Other high profile speakers included the Therapy Advisor for the Welsh Government, Alison Strode, Director of Therapies and Health Scientists for Cardiff and Vale Health Board, Fiona Jenkins and Allied Health Professional Officer for the Department of Health in London, Lisa Hughes. Topics ranged from “Uniprofessionalism: Is this a Barrier?” To “Leaping Over the strategic barrier – influencing from the other side”

The afternoon considered solutions to barriers with two different approaches. Matt Wyatt and Kim Tovey File 101031lead the workshops. Using either the Edward De Bono (who introduced the term lateral thinking to provide a new slant on traditional issues) approach or the Zig Zag problem solving method delegates tackled everyday concerns. These ranged from lack of funding to effective interagency working.

Knowledge barometers were completed before and after the conference and feedback from the day was excellent. Everyone left the conference with renewed vigour to tackle some if not all File 101029of those everyday challenges found in delivery of healthcare today.

LaMPs members can download some of the presentations from the conference below.  You will need to login to access these.  Members can also download them from the Resources section of the website.
